>Dairy Cows

Added on by Thomas Boyd.

Last week I spent a little quality time at a dairy....just me a reporter and a media relations person from the local creamery.

While I was waiting around for the interview to conclude, I set up lights on the cattle as they fed after before milking.

>thomasboyd.net is finally working

>After two weeks of hellish domain transfers, CNAME and FORWARDING problems, I finally got my blog to show up with my domain name thomasboyd.net.

I don't think is really working as it should but it will work for now until it get it figured out.
I think it's just forwarding and not using the cname as photoshelter suggests it should. If anyone out there has some insight on this, I'd appreciate it.
The bummer is that in the process, I went from a top five ranking in google to falling off the face of the earth. Luckily, my blog it still top three on a thomas boyd search.

Cole's Baseball Game on June 3, 2009, in Happy Valley, Oregon from Thomas Boyd on Vimeo.

I shot this to experiment with the new firmware update to the 5D Mark II that allows manual exposure control in the video mode. It worked great. This is a just quick edit so cut me some slack on the production value.

Tech info: Shot on a 5D Mark II with the latest firmware upgraded that allows manual exposure. I used 24-105/4, 5/1.4, 70-200/2.8, and a 300/2.8 lens.

>Bullet to the Eye

From Blogger Pictures

This is the closest I've ever come to losing an eye. I was edging my lawn in the front yard and weed eater caught a rock or something and it flew through my glasses and embedded a piece of glass in my eye lid. Another half-inch or less toward my eyeball and glass would have seriously injured my eyeball. I'm sitting her now with a chunk of gauze taped over a quarter-inch slice. I'm trying to decide if I need stitches or not. I'd rather not have to deal with it, but it may be necessary. I'm just glad I had on my sun glasses. Next time I will wear proper safety glasses. My lawn looks great though.

>Mt. Hood Pano Shot From My Backyard

This is a pano from three frames shot through a 600/4 IS with a 1.4x teleconverter on a 5D Mark II. The final stitched image was 151 mb. I didn't spend much time working on it to get rid of the flaws because it's not that interesting. But, I thought I'd at least post it here...mostly as experiment.

Gourmet Loves Portland Waffles - Images by Thomas Boyd

For my third Gourmet.com contribution, I shot the Waffle Window on Hawethorne Blvd. here in Portland. It was even documented on this blog and showed up on The Oregonian reddit feed.

For photographers out there, I wanted to give a hats-off to picture editor Ryan Schick at Gourmet.com. He's the best New York photo editor I've ever dealt with. I know aphotoeditor.com gives great feedback to photographers on how they should conduct themselves with photo editors, but I have to do the same for photo editors in the form showing by example on how a great photo editor conducts business.

First off, Schick sends complete but short emails with upbeat language. He sends the corresponding text that will accompany the photos. He follows up quickly with feedback and requests for changes. He'll call immediately with questions or answers. He's appreciative of the work. Things happen quickly and with purpose. Time is not wasted with obtuse language.

And, while I'm on a roll with the unsolicited back-slapping, I have to say, I love the way Gourmet Magazine and Gourmet.com uses photos. The sophisticated art direction on Gourmet.com surprised me with the use of diptychs and mixing color with black and white. The photo selection was spot on. I was delighted every time with they came up with.

I love that they take the time to ask for alternate processing or feedback on how the photos will be used. I just feel like the photo treatment has been first class. I hope their editors appreciate what their doing it as much as I have.

>Rudy Fernandez's Alter Ego Thanks Bruce and I

Added on by Thomas Boyd.

>I get get Google Alerts on my name and this is one of the strangest instances I've seen so far in the alerts. There a blogger out there that posts as if he were the Portland Trail Blazers Rudy Fernandez. In his latest post, he thanks Bruce Ely and I for the photos we shot at the Blazers Nuggets game.

Well, Rudy, you are welcome.
