Trend Alert: Kickball! It's the next big thing. The college kids are playing kickball. The only difference between playground kickball and their version: Pabst Blue Ribbon and Camels...while on base.

It's a healthy and harmless activity done while smoking cigarettes and drinking beer.

I just found out I won an Award of Excellence in the sports action category for this photo in the Pictures of the Year (http://poyi.org/) competition.

I shot this photo at the Junior Olympics last year at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

This kid was dead last and went completely underwater in the steeplechase. I photographed him when he came up.

I'm seen here prepping for the preps. We cover two prep basketball tournements in Corvallis and Eugene. I'll have a hand in all of it. I shot two games last night.

I appreciate the energy and enthusiasm for the game seen in the competition.

>Not Leaving Las Vegas

Added on by Thomas Boyd.

>Okay, I've been on the road for three days. Now I'm stuck in Las Vegas. As I type this update it's 3:40 a.m. I got here at 7:00 p.m. for a 8:30 p.m. flight to Eugene. We left a half hour late and were in the air about 45 minutes when the pilot says he can't land in Eugene because of the weather...fog presumably. He informs us we would go back to Las Vegas and catch a flight out in the morning.

We couldn't just land either, we had to circle the city for about another half hour to burn off 2000 pounds of fuel. When we land we get new tickets that will put us in Eugene at 1:15 p.m. after we leave from here and go to Phoenix for a change!

So, I was done shooting in Reno at about 10:00 a.m. this morning. I had a rental car. I could have driven from Reno and been home hours ago! Had I known!

Anyway, I'll have some pix from my trip up in few days.

I took Cole and Greta to visit Ray Robinson today. Ray lives on a beautiful ranch in Deadwood, Oregon. He has built an amazing 18-inch guage train. So far, he has over 4000 feet of track down including this amazing trestle that goes over the North Fork of Deadwood Creek. He has two engines, one diesel and one steam. The one above is the diesel version. He was also featured on OPB's television show, Oregon Field Guide.

This is a private railroad that one can only be seen by invitation. It was a real treat to experience it.

>Bad Week

>It's been tough a couple days. First, the blower goes out on our gas furnace. On Tuesday night we smelled a horrible burning odor coming through the registers. I ended up calling the fire department to check it out. Nothing was on fire.

When I woke up in the morning, it was 63 degrees inside the house. The blower stopped working. Then, on the way to taking the kids to school, Carries crashes the car. No one was hurt. But some guy's poor Vanagon was gone. Our car sustained $4000 in damage.

Tonight, all is well, We're just a little poorer. We have a rental car, the heat is on, and I just want to watch a little television.

As I like to say, "It coulda been worse." (I love that saying because it's both optimistic and pessimistic at the same time).
